my class photo Welcome to Kindergarten! Hi I'm Gwen Hooper; I'll be guiding your little darlings through a year of new learning experiences. Here's a little information about myself. The 2019-20 School Year will be my 30th year of instruction. During my 29 years of experience as a regular classroom teacher I have taught Kindergarten, 2nd, 3rd and 5th grades.

I began my education here at Grandy Primary and graduated from Camden County High School. I have one son, Owen who also began at GPS and graduated from the Camden County School System. He attended and graduated from North Carolina State University for both his Undergraduate and Graduate degrees. He currently works as the Director of Innovative Education at the University of South Florida in Tampa and is now pursuing his Doctorate in Higher Education at USF. I'm one proud Mom!!!

My degree is a Bachelor's of Science in Elementary Education; certified for grades K-6th. In 2009 I became a National Board Certified Teacher and I'm also near completion of my Masters degree in Elementary Education.

My student teaching was spent in kindergarten here at GPS under the guidance of Mrs. Annie Rice (she was my 2nd grade math teacher). In 1990 I began my teaching career at Camden Middle School. There I instructed 5th graders for 11 years in math, science, technology and health. For 14 years, I've helped to guide my "Little Sweeties" through Kindergarten. At one point I wanted to spread my wings and try something new so I was given the opportunity of teaching both Second and Third grades. This will be my third year returning to Kindergarten - the most challenging grade I've taught. I'm looking forward to the new challenges and rewards this year will bring. I am extremely excited for all the learning experiences I will be sharing with your child.

In addition to teaching during the regular school year; for 22 years I also instructed Summer School for grades K-8 math, science, social studies and/or language arts. Most of my summer school experiences were spent teaching 5th-8th grade math. For three summers I was a 2nd grade RAP (Read to Achieve) teacher. My role as RAP instructor was to guide students towards preparation of 3rd grade EOG's in both math and reading.

I feel very blessed and honored to have been given the opportunity to teach in the Camden County School System going on 30 years. I love my career choice and my students. I'm looking forward to working with you as well as guiding your children through a positive and successful year in Kindergarten.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. If you're able; please send your message by Class Dojo or by school email. My GPS email address is You may also send me a note or leave a message in the office. I will respond as quickly as possible.
